It is a pleasure to introduce our February Teletherapist spotlight, Rachel Johannes. Rachel has been with Unlimited Teletherapy for seven years and resides in St. Paul, Minnesota. When asked about the weather, she excitingly said, “It is a nice day; it is 35 degrees out!” Rachel is the Lead SLP and primarily works with upper elementary grades and middle school.
1. What’s one thing people don’t know about you that they would be surprised to discover?
When I was a kid, I really wanted to be a writer. That was the career that I was going to try to do.
2. What is your favorite part about working at Unlimited Teletherapy? What do you enjoy most?
When I first started, what I liked most was having the opportunity to be home and work. I just had a baby, and being able to be a mom and see my baby during the day while still being able to work was great. Now that I am past the baby stage, I really enjoy the SLP community. The things we connect with and share. It has been a really supportive and great community to be a part of, even though we are so far apart. I am the only SLP on the Unlimited Teletherapy team that lives in St. Paul. A few others live in the midwest but are not within driving distance to grab a coffee.
3. How did you get started in the industry?
While in college, my Grandfather had a medical issue (still unknown), and he lost his ability to speak. It was then my mom encouraged me to look into speech-language therapy. I enrolled in a few courses while in college, and from there, my love for the career began, and I haven’t stopped!
4. What does a workday look like for you?
Aside from being the Lead SLP, I also have a small caseload of students. My morning starts by checking my calendar for the day and getting everything organized, including sending out weekly reminders, check-ins with other therapists, and therapy prep for my students. If therapists need a question answered, they come to me. I also line out new students with their assigned therapists and keep the show running smoothly for the students and 30+ therapists I work with.
5. What, if anything, are you currently binge-watching? Or reading?
I just finished binge-watching “White Lotus.” You can usually find “Community” or “The Office” playing when I need something relaxing to watch. Aside from TV shows, I love audiobooks. Brené Brown is my most-listened-to audiobook that stays on repeat.
6. What’s one thing on your bucket list?
Travel. See the world! I hope to one day visit New Zealand. Japan, and Iceland.
Rachel is one of many of our Teletherapists at Unlimited Teletherapy that is passionate, nurturing, and committed to supporting students to meet their individual goals. We are honored to have her on our team!
