It is a pleasure to introduce our March Teletherapist spotlight, McKenzie Lee. McKenzie has been with Unlimited Teletherapy going on one year.
1. Tell me all about yourself.
I am 28-years-old and recently moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia. I am originally from Minnesota. That is where I grew up. My husband is in the military, and we got married in December and are now making Virginia Beach our home. I don’t have any pets, but hope to have one someday soon!
2. How long have you been with Unlimited Teletherapy?
This is my first year working with Unlimited Teletherapy. I previously had been an in-person Speech Pathologist for four years. With the flexibility Unlimited Teletherapy offers and my husband being in the military, this was a really good option for us. I enjoy it. It is a fun and creative way to target speech and language skills to kids.
3. What’s one thing people don’t know about you that they would be surprised to discover?
Well….I just ran my second marathon yesterday. Running has been something I have enjoyed doing in my free time. I also really enjoy knitting. I like to knit mittens, blankets, scarves, and socks. I would say that is my hidden talent.
4. What is your favorite part about working at Unlimited Teletherapy? What do you enjoy most?
I enjoy the communication that is required being virtual. I love that there is a whole team approach to helping our kids improve their speech and language skills. I need to be talking with the Teachers. I need to be talking with the Parents. I can’t just push into a classroom or see a parent at the school when they come to pick up their kids from school. I have to be very intentional about how I am letting the team know, “here is what we are working on,” and “here is how you guys can be working on this in your setting.” Providing them with the tools that they need for their respective settings.
5. How did you get started in the industry?
I have known I wanted to be a speech pathologist since I was in eighth grade. I had the opportunity to tutor a girl who had high needs. With her, I was able to communicate creatively in ways that I had never experienced before. Her mom told me that the connection that we had was really special and speech was something I should consider. Speech Pathology was something I had never heard of before. So I did, and I liked it. I knew going into college that this was what I wanted to do.
6. What does a workday look like for you?
I jump online at 9:00 or 9:30 a.m. I live in the east, so I start my day later than in New Mexico. I check emails and send out my schedules to my Teachers for the day. For my kids with higher needs, I send the teachers reminders on how they can target what we are working on in the classroom. I typically see several groups of kids back to back. On average, I see 14 students a day. Some are in groups, and others are individuals. Then, I might have the opportunity to do the evaluation report write-up and fit my lunch where it works best for the day. I also like to stay on top of my daily billing, and that is typically how I close out the day.
7. What, if anything, are you currently binge-watching? Or reading?
I enjoy watching cooking or food review shows. I recently started watching “Somebody Feed Phil” because it feeds into my desire to travel. He goes around sampling food while teaching us the culture of different foods and cities.
8. What’s one thing on your bucket list?
I want to go to Ireland. Part of my heritage is Ireland and Scotland. I would love to see all of the Irish and Scottish landscapes. I also want to hike Patagonia someday.
McKenzie is one of many of our Teletherapists at Unlimited Teletherapy that is passionate, nurturing, and committed to supporting students to meet their individual goals. We are honored to have her on our team!
